Dawg and Blade in the truck, the engine revved up, and going very slowly in first gear, rolled by Horse and Gadget. Dawg gave the boys in the car a short toot on the trucks horn, as he went by. Horse fell in behind the slow moving truck.
"Why is he driving so slow?" asked, Horse.
"He probably can't drive a stick," said Gadget. “Blow your horn, see if we can get him to stop. I know how to drive a stick. I can give him some lessons while we are on our way to the liquor store."
Horse gave several toots on Dawg's car horn.
“What the hell does he want?” Dawg, asked, Blade, while looking in the rear view mirror.
“Hell if I know... Wait, I know. Maybe one of them can drive this mutha. Pull over and let’s see,” advised, Blade.
After several more attempts to get the truck to stop, Horse blowing the horn of the car, the boys watched as Dawg pulled over to the curb. A police car came around a corner a couple blocks down from where they were. As soon cruiser was on the street the boys were on, the cherries and blues came on and the cop car went racing by the men in a hurry. Again, it must have been on a call. Again the boys were lucky. How much longer can their luck hold out?
The gang watched the police car disappear as it turned onto another street several blocks behind them. Everybody started breathing again. Horse watched, as Gadget got out of the car, and walked to the driver side of the truck. After a moment, Blade and Gadget exchanged places.
Horse, with his new riding partner, Blade, watched as the truck began moving again. It drove for about a half block and then began to pick up speed. Gadget had taught Dawg how to get out of first gear. They were on their way.
The ride to the store took about a half-hour. It was a good thing Gadget knew how to drive a stick. If Dawg had to drive the whole distance to the West Side in first gear it would have been daybreak by the time they got there. Gadget could have taken the wheel, but he didn't want anything to do with driving the truck through the liquor stores front doors.
Better to teach Dawg how to do it, he thought, as he instructed Dawg on when to shift gears judging by the sound of the engine and how fast they were moving.
It was a quick lesson, and Gadget hoped it was enough. He knew backing the truck into the gate of the liquor store would require a more skilled driver, but they didn’t have time to get into the finer points of driving a manually shifted transmission. One thing was for sure, they’d find out shortly.
